How about I start this post with defining what Freelancing actually means, so we can get on the same page. A Freelancer is a self-employed individual with a valuable skill who doesn’t have to commit to a single or long-term employer. They work independently for several different companies or clients from the comfort their home or any place of their choosing and mostly from their computer! Notice the part where I said with a “Valuable Skill” ? it is very important to have a skill first before thinking of freelancing, if you don’t have a skill that is valuable and you know people are making money with, you cannot be a freelancer! (what would you offer people as your service?) A little background about me and my freelance journey. I started very young – at the age of 19 – immediately I was done with Uni, I chose Web and Graphics design as my preferred field, I have worked with a bunch load of clients (both good and bad), I have been able to build my freelance business that was started on my Grand-Mother’s dining table into a Sought-after Creative design agency in London (I’ll give you the link to my agency’s website at the end of the post), I currently mentor, coach and guide other freelancers (and newbies) on how to become more effective, get the right skills and charge what they deserve. Even though success means different things to different people, almost everybody can agree on the fact that we all want to achieve success. We want to taste it and have it so that we can provide for ourselves and people we care about and love. This is why we burst our asses everyday doing different things, learning new skills, going to jobs we don’t necessarily feel passionate about and doing anything humanly possible to achieve “success”.
How about we pause for a minute, what does success actually mean to you? Have you ever taken a moment from the hustle and bustle of life to define what success means to you as a person? A well defined meaning of Success would be “achieving the goals and dreams you have for yourself” so therefore being successful means the achievement of desired visions and planned goals. Got invited to Radio Diamond in Manchester for a interview by Miss Motivator. I had a lot fun during my 2 days stay in Manchester, it was amazing going to the “country side” of the UK. Its not my first time in Manchester though, I was there once with my friends and it was a crazy experience. Being self-employed and “your own boss” is becoming more sexier and appealing now than ever. Almost everyone wants to be their own boss, even my younger brother who is still in Uni has been telling me “Big bro, I don’t want to work for anyone when am done with school, I want to be my own boss just like you”. Little does he know that its not as easy as it looks or sound, actually, a lot of people don’t know as well so its a universal thing. I won’t lie though, the idea of being able to work for yourself, not have a boss, work at your own times, pick your days off (even if entrepreneurs don’t have days off) and do what you like is so intriguing and some times feels so far fetched but its not. Don’t believe the hype, don’t quit your job just yet. Be strategic about it, it’s very easy for someone who’s already a successful entrepreneur or someone who doesn’t have context about your life to tell you to quit your job and become an entrepreneur. If there’s one thing I try to do with my videos, blogposts and content generally is to always ensure that am saying it as it is and am keeping it 100, never over hyping and never over simplifying anything. It was a great honour to have dinned with Usain Bolt before his retirement race in London. Even though it was a night celebrating Black Excellence, being one of the youngest person in the very special and private dinner — I made it a point to pick things I could learn from the whole experience rather than be star-strucked or enjoy the free food (trust me, the food was amazing, lol)
