Aretha Franklin’s Early Life.
Aretha Franklin was born to gospel singer mother Barbara (née Siggers) and circuit preacher father Clarence LaVaughn “C. L.” Franklin in Memphis On March 25, 1942. Her father’s philandering attitude made their family go through ups and down and her parents splitted up in 1948 when she was just six years old. The father moved the kids (including Arteha Franklin) to Detriot, their mother visited from time to time.
Aretha’s mother died of a heart attack on March 7, 1952, before Aretha’s tenth birthday. Her grandmother and several other women took turns helping the father with the grooming and taking care of the children in the Franklin home. Her musical gifts became apparent at an early age. Largely self-taught by ear, she was regarded as a child prodigy. A gifted pianist accompanied with a powerful voice, Aretha got her start singing in front of her father’s congregation.
Her father’s emotional and hear-felt sermons made him become famous and tagged the “man with the million dollar voice”, his fame amongst churches brought a lot of attention and celebrity friendships, one of which was Clara Ward, who acted as a role model for young Aretha Franklin. From her time growing up in the home of a prominent African American preacher to the end of her life, Franklin was immersed and involved in the struggle for civil rights and women’s rights. She provided money for civil rights groups, at times covering payroll, and performed at benefits and protests

Aretha started her career in the church. After her mother’s death, she began singing solos at New Bethel, debuting with the hymn, “Jesus, Be a Fence Around Me”. She joined her father on the road on his “gospel caravan” tours where she performed in various churches, he acted as her manager.
She signed her first recording deal with J.V.B. Records where equipments were installed in the New Bethel church and nine tracks were recorded, featuring Franklin on vocals and piano. Just like any other young and rising star, she got many offers to join or sign with record labels. She released her first single, “Never Grow Old”, backed with “You Grow Closer”. A second single, “Precious Lord (Part One)” backed with “Precious Lord (Part Two) and other songs made up the side one of the 1956 album, “Spirituals” which was released under her first label JCB records.
In 1965, Checker Records released her album “Songs of Faith” featuring the five tracks from her previous Spiritual album and four previously unreleased recordings. She confineded in her father that she wanted to follow the footsteps of Sam Cooke in recording and making Pop music, this led to her move to NewYork. Her records got to the attention of Columbia Records who signed her as a “five-percent artists”, before signing to Columbia, she got offers from RCA and Tamla. Her first single under Columbia Records “Today I Sing The Blues” was released in September 1960 and later reach the top ten of the Hot Rhythm & Blues Sellers chart
Under Columbia Records, her first album was titled “Aretha: With The Ray Bryant Combo” and it included her first single to chart Billboard Hot 100 “Wont Be Long” which simultaneously peaked at number 7 on the R7B chart.
Her songs and recordings under Columbia Records saw her performing in numerous genres of music such as standards, vocal jazz, blues, doo-wop and rhythm and blues. In 1962, Columbia released two more albums “The Electrifying Aretha Franklin” and “The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Franklin”, which reached number 69 on the Billboard Chart. In November 1966, after a good 6 year run with Columbia Records, Aretha Franklin chose to sign with Atlantic Records.
She recorded her first single under Atlantic titled “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) which peaked at number one on the R&B chart and number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Aretha got her first top-ten pop single. Her first gold album was released under Atlantic, it was titled “I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You”. At Atlantic, she had a good working chemistry with producer Jerry Wexler which helped in the creation of the majority of her peak recordings with Atlantic. In February 1968, Aretha Franklin scored her 2 Grammys with the release of hit singles such as “Chain of Fools”, “Ain’t No Way”, “Think” and “I Say a Little Prayer”.
She had her first international tour that same year in May and covered Time Magazine in June. In 1980, after leaving Atlantic Records, Aretha Franklin signed with Arista Records and that same year gave a command performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall in front of Queen Elizabeth. Her first album under Arista was a self-named titled album “Aretha” which featured number 3 R&B hit “United Together” and her Grammy nominated cover of Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose”. Her second album was “Love All The Hurt Away” which included her Grammy-wining cover of Same & Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Comin”. For the past years before 1981, her album “Jump to it” went gold.
Fast forward to 2006, She made international headlines for performing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” at President Barack Obama’s inaugural ceremony with her church hat becoming a popular topic online On August 13, 2018, Franklin was reported to be gravely ill at her home in Riverfront Towers, Detroit. She was under intense care and surrounded by friends and family. Stevie Wonder, Jesse Jackson and ex-husband Glynn Turman visited her on her deathbed. Franklin died at her home on August 16, 2018, aged 76
